Grand Canyon South Rim Day Trip - 2015

Grand Canyon, South Rim

Back in Las Vegas for business, and another day trip to the Grand Canyon, and this time I chose the South Rim, which would be a full day drive with a colleague from work driving us there and back.

The trip to the South Rim itself was quite uneventful, but still full of the sights of endless open roads, desertic landscape, and just an incomparable feeling of freedom and adventure to experience! And being still in April, the park was not so full, despite the amazing, clear, and dry weather blessing us all the way there.

As we had left a bit late, we only arrived after lunch and decided to split in order to each concentrate on what was more important to us, and for me, of course, some dedicated photographic sights at different pre-determined locations I had studied on the map the day before: limited time, must plan accordingly!

At first glance, it looked quite similar to the West Rim, but very quickly, as I approached the edge of the paths allowing us to be very close to the precipices, the differences started to show. And I think the most obvious difference was just the sheer size of the chasm in front of me, which seemed deeper, and more contorted, tortured in all directions, like the earth had literally been cut through by a giant jagged-edged sword or axe or cruel blade of some sort.

As I explored a bit more, some of the sightseeing hot spots, where people could go off the ‘safe areas’ and onto the rocks outcrops, where another step forward would basically see you plummet hundreds of meters down! And despite the yearly case(s) of such accidents occurring, one could see countless, mostly young people, death-defying attempts to go as close as possible to the edge. But for me, it meant great photographic opportunities to show the sheer scale of the Grand Canyon…

It's a long, long way down, mister!

So close to the edge :-(

I continued by wandering, making a mandatory stop at the visitor centre and getting some small gifts for the family, then exited and stumbled across some very curious and not-so-shy ground squirrels, soaring effortlessly on the hot afternoon drafts above the canyon, a few Turkey vultures: part of an endangered species. Human encroachment on nature and evil, poisonous acts are the main culprits. Interestingly, as I write this and am just back from my South Africa Kruger National Park safari, local vultures there also suffered similar challenges, but more so related to poaching activities.

The hours passed, as I roamed the canyon edges paths forth and back, sometimes taking the time to just sit and let my gaze wander into the distance, with no intended purpose. I then thought how amazing a country the United States is, really, especially for the variety and splendor of its national parks and wildlife, and if I had the time and resources, I would love to explore in depth some of them… On top of my list, Yellowstone, of course :-)

All this walking and reflection ultimately brought me closer to the end of that day of exploration and reflection. As I walked back to the parking lot, and let my eyes feast on the last rays of sun kissing the edges of the great rock formations. Long, pointed, and severe-looking shadows now ran across the great divides, as more tourists also decided to turn around, with the air suddenly getting cooler by the minute.

It was time to get into the car and endure the long ride back to the great city of lights and entertainment!
